Starting college this fall? In this episode, we're sharing seven simple things every new college student should do before classes begin.

Whether you're a first year student moving onto campus for the first time or a returning student preparing for another semester, August is the perfect time to set yourself up for success. College success comes from small habits and simple routines that help you stay organized and prepared throughout the semester. Here are seven things you can do before classes begin to make your fall semester smoother and less stressful.
College preparation tip 1. Check your University email
Before classes begin, professors, admissions staff, financial aid offices, and other University departments may send important information. Missing an email could mean missing a deadline, important paperwork, or helpful updates about your courses.
College preparation tip 2. Know your professors' office hours
Take a few minutes to review your syllabi and identify when and where your professors' office hours are located. Office hours are a great place to:
Ask questions about assignments
Clarify course content
Discuss career goals
Get advice about your major
Build professional relationships
College preparation tip 3. Update your calendar
As soon as you get all of your syllabi:
Add assignment due dates
Include exam dates
Mark project deadlines
Schedule study sessions prior to the big due date
Whether you use Google Calendar, Outlook, a planner, or a paper calendar, having everything in one place can help you be successful.
College preparation tip 4. Walk your class schedule
If you're able to visit campus before classes begin, take time to locate all of your buildings and classrooms.
College preparation tip 5. Order your textbooks
Before you click "buy," double check the syllabus for the correct edition your professor requires. If you already have an older version of a textbook, consider reaching out to your professor and asking if it's ok to use.
College preparation tip 6. Learn about campus resources
Before classes begin, get familiar with the support services available on campus, including:
Tutoring Center
Writing Center
Library
Health Center
Counseling Services
Know not only where these resources are located but how to schedule appointments.
College preparation tip 7. Create a weekly routine
Consider scheduling time for:
Studying
Exercise and wellness
Adulting tasks like laundry, cleaning, shopping, and errands
Social activities
Rest and relaxation
You don't have to follow the exact same schedule every week, but having a routine can help you stay balanced between coursework and having a life outside of classes.
