Creative Volcano Bulletin Board Ideas for the Classroom

Updated: 6 days ago

Hi friends!

I’m so excited to introduce you to Hannah Case, a preservice teacher from Australia and a self-proclaimed “lover of books.” Hannah is double majoring in History and English Education, and her Instagram is full of inspiring literacy content. When I saw her post about a volcano bulletin board, I knew I had to share it with you—you’re going to erupt with excitement!

Here’s Hannah in her own words:

How a Volcano Bulletin Board Sparked Student Curiosity

“I’m currently in my third year of teacher training and loving every second of it. Specializing in History and English has been an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to bring my ideas to life in the classroom! During my first year at university, I had the opportunity to teach a Year 6 class. At first, I was nervous about working with older students, but they were just as wonderful as my previous placement. One of my favorite moments was creating a volcano bulletin board to introduce our next Geography topic. I didn’t tell the students what it was for—I just put it up and let their curiosity take over. It worked! They started asking questions, reading the facts, and even doing their own research. My top tip: Add tissue paper to every display board to give it that 3D effect!”

Teaching Tip: Make It Interactive with Augmented Reality

Inspired by Hannah’s creative display? Take it a step further with the Quiver App, a free augmented reality tool available on iOS and Android. Here’s how to bring your volcano bulletin board to life:

  1. Download the Quiver App.

  2. Print the free volcano coloring page from their website.

  3. Have students color the page.

  4. Use the app to scan the image and watch it erupt in 3D!

This activity allows students to:

  • Visualize how temperature affects volcanic eruptions

  • Label the parts of a volcano

  • Engage with science content in a fun, tech-savvy way
