Meet Allison Alfonso: A First-Year Special Education Teacher Making Magic

Hi readers! I’m excited to introduce you to an inspiring educator I met during my time at Grove City College Allison Alfonso. A 2018 graduate with a degree in Elementary and Special Education, Allison is already making a big impact in her K–1 Multiple Disabilities Classroom.

From day one, Allison has been a go-getter, and today she’s sharing one of her favorite classroom management strategies that’s both fun and effective, especially during the holidays!

Creative Classroom Management in Special Education Idea: Meet “The Witch”

As a first-year teacher, Allison has embraced the challenge of building her classroom from scratch. Without years of recycled materials, she’s using this opportunity to get creative with classroom management in special education, and her students are loving it!

One of her most successful tools so far? A behavior management strategy called “The Witch.”

Here’s how it works:

  • The Witch is a small doll with “magical” powers.

  • Each night, she “flies” to a new spot in the classroom.

  • Students must find her each morning—but they can’t touch her, or she’ll lose her magic!

  • She’s always watching for positive behavior and may bring holiday treats if students are respectful and kind.

So far, The Witch has delivered munchkins for a birthday celebration and even brought a pumpkin to class!

This strategy not only encourages good behavior but also adds a sense of wonder and excitement to the school day, especially around Halloween.

Why This Works

Allison’s approach is a great example of how first-year teachers can use seasonal themes and imaginative tools to:

  • Build classroom routines

  • Reinforce positive behavior

  • Create a joyful, inclusive learning environment

  • Engage students with diverse learning needs
