Hi Edumagicians,
You are in luck! This week, Dr. Josh Weaver joined our practicum class as a guest speaker and shared what he looks for in a teaching candidate. His advice was packed with practical wisdom, and I couldn’t wait to pass it along to you. Let’s dive into these top teacher interview tips that will help you shine during your job search.
The 3 Rs: Rigor, Relevance, and Relationships
Dr. Weaver began by emphasizing the importance of the 3 Rs in education:
Rigor: Challenge your students while meeting them where they are.
Relevance: Connect learning to real-world events and use technology to engage students.
Relationships: Build strong connections with students, families, faculty, and the community. Relationships are the foundation of great teaching.
Top 10 Teacher Interview Tips for Preservice Teachers
10. Proofread your application. Your application is your first impression. Have someone review it, even if you’re a strong writer. Read it aloud to catch awkward phrasing and ensure clarity.
9. Avoid starting every sentence with “I.” Districts want team players. Use phrases like “we accomplished” or “my co-op and I” to show collaboration.
8. Show balance. Your resume and digital presence should reflect more than just academics. Highlight extracurriculars, outreach, and professional development.
7. Suit up. Even if the first-round interview is short, dress professionally. Show that you’re serious and ready to be an educator of excellence.
6. Focus on content. In second-round interviews, be ready to discuss subject-specific knowledge. Special education candidates should understand the IEP process and demonstrate their ability to collaborate with families.
5. Be searchable online. Administrators will Google you. Make sure your digital footprint reflects a positive, professional presence. Keep personal content private and showcase your learning journey on platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
4. Be a superhero. You are a role model in your school community. Embrace your influence and lead with kindness and professionalism.
3. Avoid being the “sage on the stage.”During teaching demonstrations, engage students with group work, think-pair-share, and the 4Cs: communication, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.
2. Highlight your experiences. You are not “just” a preservice teacher. Share your ideas, strategies, and classroom wins. Let your passion and innovation shine.
1. Use your digital portfolio. In final-round interviews, your digital portfolio can be a game-changer. Use it to support your answers with real examples—videos, lesson plans, student work, and more.
