Why Edcamp Is a Must-Attend Professional Development for Educators

What Is an Edcamp and Why It Matters

I’ve attended many camps over the years, and I’ll attend many more. Still, I want to take a moment to share why Edcamp stands out as a powerful professional development for educators at any level. So, what exactly is an Edcamp? In my experience, it’s a space where you learn, lead, and repeat. Let’s break that down.

Learn First, Lead Always

At Edcamp, we show up as learners: lead learners, in fact. We come to learn from others: strategies, tools, pedagogies, and techniques that help us grow. One of the first things you’ll do is jot down a topic you want to explore on a sticky note. Got more than one? Awesome, write them all down!

Edcamp empowers you to lead your learning using the “law of two feet.” If a session isn’t resonating with you, it’s totally okay to get up and join another one. No judgment, just learning.

Everyone Is a Leader

Every educator has something valuable to share. One of the most unique aspects of Edcamp is that there are no pre-planned sessions or formal presentations. Instead, it’s all about discussion. The guiding belief? The smartest person in the room is the room.

Benefits of Attending an Edcamp

Edcamp offers a dynamic and personalized professional development for educators. Here are just a few of the reasons why it’s worth your time:

1. Learning That Sticks

The learning at Edcamp is incredible, but it’s up to you to own it. Participate actively, ask questions, and share your insights. If a session doesn’t meet your needs, move on to one that does. It’s your time to grow.

2. Networking That Matters

Edcamp is a fantastic place to reconnect with your professional learning network (PLN) and meet new educators. The conversations and connections you make here can last well beyond the event.

3. Free Food and Fellowship

Let’s be real—donuts and coffee make everything better. Edcamp often provides meals and snacks, which create a welcoming environment for conversation and collaboration. Bonus: If you’re a college student, it’s a meal outside the cafeteria!

4. Swag for Days

Teachers love freebies, and Edcamp delivers. From stickers to notebooks, you’ll leave with some fun and useful swag to take back to your classroom.

5. Prize Patrol

Who doesn’t love prizes? Edcamps often end with exciting giveaways, but you have to be present to win. If you do win, be sure to thank the sponsors who made it possible.

Edcamp Is for Everyone

Edcamp is an amazing professional development for educators, whether you’re a preservice teacher or a seasoned veteran with 25 years of experience. There’s always something new to learn, and always something valuable to share.

Preservice teachers, don’t underestimate your voice. You bring fresh ideas, perspectives, and energy to the table. Your contributions matter.

And did I mention? Edcamps are FREE. That’s right an entire day of personalized PD at no cost to you.
