Hi friends,
I’m excited to share three free formative assessment tools that you can start using in your classroom right away! This post was inspired by a presentation I co-led with Jordyn Pistilli at last year’s conference, and we recently shared it again with preservice teachers during a technology of instruction class. Let’s jump in!
Why Use Free Formative Assessment Tools?
Formative assessment (FA) is a powerful way to check for understanding, guide lesson planning, and support student learning in real time. Here are a few quick facts about formative assessment:
Helps measure background knowledge
Used during learning to check for understanding
Guides teachers in planning and adjusting instruction
Focuses on learning, not grades
Can be done with or without technology
Saves time and boosts engagement
Now, let’s explore three free formative assessment tools that are easy to use and packed with potential.

Free Formative Assessment Tools
1. Kahoot
Kahoot is a game-based formative assessment tool that adds a fun layer of competition. Some students thrive on the challenge, while others may focus more on winning than learning. Either way, it’s a great way to spark engagement. You can create a free account and explore a library of ready-to-use questions across grade levels and subjects.

Quizalize
2. Quizalize
Quizalize allows students to compete against each other or the computer. It offers a variety of question formats, including images and explanations, which help clarify concepts quickly. Teachers can set time limits and explore public quizzes in the marketplace to save time and spark ideas.

Formative assessment doesn’t have to be complicated. These free formative assessment tools are perfect for preservice teachers looking to build confidence, save time, and connect with students in meaningful ways.
