So, you want to teach internationally?

Updated: Jun 6, 2022

We are back with another episode of the Edumagic podcast. Erin O'Byrne shares about working with English language learners. Erin is an online training specialist. She states, "I want to help build your students' confidence in speaking." This episode features Erin's international teaching story and tips for teaching abroad. Let's get to those tips now.

Tips for teaching internationally

  • Learn to teach English to international students with the CELTA Cambridge course.

  • Know what the acronyms mean. For example, the EFL acronym stands for English as a foreign language. The ESLaccronym stands for English as a second language. It is also called English language teaching, or ELT.

  • It is more than language instruction.

  • You must build your confidence and earn their trust and a relationship with them and each other.

  • Get to know your students as individual learners.

  • You need to develop communication strategies and build relationships with students.

  • Continue to develop a sense of community within your classroom.

  • It will take time and patience.

  • Make sure your students know how to communicate with you, the teacher, and with each other. Give them helpful phrases to use in and out of the classroom.

  • Establish a common ground between students and yourself.
