Hey Edumagicians,
Let’s break down the basics of a Twitter chat for educators. A Twitter chat is a real-time conversation on Twitter that happens at a specific time using a designated hashtag. These chats are usually centered around a theme, like Read Across America Week or classroom tech tools. If you're new to the idea, check out this helpful article that explains how a Twitter chat works.
These chats happen all the time, morning, afternoon, and evening, so there’s definitely one that fits your schedule. Use the Participate calendar to browse upcoming chats and find one that matches your interests. I know it might feel a little overwhelming at first, but trust me, it’s an amazing way to learn, grow, and connect with other educators.
So, you’ve picked a chat, marked the date and time on your calendar, and you’re excited to dive in. Now what?

How to Get Started with a Twitter Chat for Educators
First, take a deep breath. You’ve got this!
Here are a few steps to help you feel confident and ready:
Follow the moderator(s) of the chat. They’ll be posting the questions using a Q1, Q2 format.
Respond using A1, A2, and so on. This keeps the conversation organized.
Always include the chat hashtag in your replies so others can see and engage with your responses.
Answer questions as they’re posted. Don’t answer them all at once and leave the chat.
Engage with others. Like, reply, and ask questions. This is where the real magic happens.
Build your professional digital presence by sharing thoughtful responses and ideas.
Don’t be afraid of side conversations. These often lead to deeper connections.
Try using TweetDeck to follow the chat more easily.
Need help finding a chat? Two of my favorites are #NT2T (New Teachers to Twitter) and #teacheredchat (Teacher Educators Chat). You can also check out this video tutorial on how to participate using TweetDeck or Twitter.
Why You Should Join a Twitter Chat for Educators
Over the years, I’ve seen so many preservice teachers go from nervous to confident after their first chat. Yes, it’s fast-paced, but the learning and networking are worth it.
Some of the best moments include:
Being welcomed by practicing teachers and administrators who are excited to see preservice teachers join the conversation.
Making connections that continue beyond the chat.
Receiving resources, book recommendations, and even job leads.
Learning about school districts where you want to work after graduation.
So yes, a Twitter chat for educators can feel a little intimidating at first, but it’s one of the best ways to take charge of your professional development. Try one this week and see where it takes you!
